The Difference Between Biodegradable, Compostable and Recyclable

Compostable is a more specific standard. Moulded Fibre (Paper Pulp)

Similar to bagasse in appearance, moulded fibre packaging is made from recycled paper pulp. It is used for egg cartons, fruit trays and food containers. It is fully recyclable and biodegradable.

The downside is that moulded fibre does not handle liquids well without an additional coating, and adding a coating can affect its compostability. For dry or semi-dry food products, it works well.

Wax-Coated Paper and Card

Paper or card coated with a thin layer of natural wax (beeswax or plant-based wax) provides a moisture barrier while remaining biodegradable. It is used for wrapping cheese, baked goods and sandwiches.

Wax-coated materials are not recyclable through standard paper recycling because the wax contaminates the process. However, they are biodegradable and home compostable, making them a good option for direct food contact applications.

How Much Does Biodegradable Food Packaging Cost?

Biodegradable options are generally more expensive than their conventional counterparts, but the gap has narrowed significantly over the past few years as demand has increased and production has scaled up.
