Tall Boxes: When Height Is the Priority

A tall box is any carton where the height is the longest dimension, usually by a good margin. We manufacture tall boxes from 300mm up to over 1200mm in height, with narrower length and width measurements to keep the overall volume (and your shipping costs) under control.

If you have ever tried to ship a floor lamp in a standard removal box, you already know why these exist. Standard cartons leave too much dead space around tall, narrow products, which means wasted void fill, higher courier charges, and more chance of the item shifting and getting damaged in transit.

What Goes in a Tall Box?

We supply tall boxes to a huge range of businesses. The most common products we see packed in them include:

• Vases, umbrella stands, and tall ceramics
• Tower PCs and server cases
• Water coolers and dispensers
• Standing display units and POS stands
• Golf bags and sporting equipment
• Rolled prints and framed artwork (when flat packing is not an option)
• Musical instruments like guitar cases and keyboard stands

We also see a lot of e-commerce sellers using tall boxes for bundled products, stacking several smaller items vertically with dividers between them. It works well for subscription boxes where presentation matters on opening.

How to Measure for a Tall Box

Always measure your product at its widest and tallest points, then add a minimum of 10mm to each internal dimension for clearance. For fragile items, allow 25-50mm on each side so you have room for protective packaging.

Courier Surcharges and Tall Parcels

This catches a lot of businesses out. Most UK couriers measure parcels by combined length and girth (the distance around the shortest cross-section). Once a parcel exceeds certain thresholds, typically 1.5m in the longest dimension or 3m combined length and girth, you will face surcharges or the parcel may be classed as non-standard.

Royal Mail caps at 1.5m on the longest side. DPD, Hermes, and UPS each have their own limits, but they all penalise long, tall parcels. The practical takeaway: if your tall box is over 1.2m high, check your courier's size bands before you order in bulk. We have helped plenty of customers shave 50mm off a box height to stay inside a cheaper shipping tier. It is a small change that saves real money at volume.

Single Wall vs Double Wall for Tall Items

This is where tall boxes differ from standard cartons. The taller the box, the more important top-to-bottom compression strength becomes. A tall, single wall box with a heavy item inside is under significant vertical stress, especially when other parcels get stacked on top during transit.

Here is a rough guide:

For lightweight but fragile items like lamps and vases, single wall boxes are usually fine as long as you pack the void space properly. For heavier products like tower PCs or water coolers, go double wall without question. The extra cost per box is pennies compared to a damage claim.

Stacking and Storage

Tall boxes have a higher centre of gravity, so they are less stable on pallets than squat, square cartons. If you are palletising tall boxes for storage or bulk shipping, a few things help:

• Alternate the orientation on each layer where possible
• Use stretch wrap generously, starting from the base
• Never stack tall boxes more than two layers high unless the contents are light
• Store tall boxes on their side if the product inside allows it, this dramatically improves pallet stability

We see warehouse damage more often with tall boxes than with any other shape. Most of the time it comes down to overstacking or poor wrapping. Spend an extra 30 seconds per pallet and you will avoid most of it.
